We discuss the dynamics of classical Dicke-type models, aiming to clarify the mechanisms by which coherent states could develop in potentially non-equilibrium systems such as semiconductor microcavities. We present simulations of an undamped model which show spontaneous coherent states with persistent oscillations in the magnitude of the order parameter. These states are generalisations of superradiant ringing to the case of inhomogeneous broadening. They correspond to the persistent gap...

Quantum state preparation through external control is fundamental to established methods in quantum information processing and in studies of dynamics. In this respect, excitons in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are of particular interest since their coupling to light allows them to be driven into a specified state using the coherent interaction with a tuned optical field such as an external laser pulse. We propose a protocol, based on adiabatic rapid passage, for the creation of entangled...

An experiment is proposed, on the coherent quantum dynamics of a semiconductor microcavity containing quantum dots. Modeling the experiment using a generalized Dicke model, we show that a tailored excitation pulse can create an energy-dependent population of excitons, which subsequently evolves to a quantum condensate of excitons and photons. The population is created by a generalization of adiabatic rapid passage, and then condenses due to a dynamical analog of the BCS instability.

We report an experimental study of the spontaneous spatial and temporal coherence of polariton condensates generated in the optical parametric oscillator configuration, below and at the parametric threshold, and as a function of condensate area. Above the threshold we obtain very long coherence times (up to 3 ns) and a spatial coherence extending over the entire condensate (40 \mu m). The very long coherence time and its dependence on condensate area and pump power reflect the suppression of...

We estimate the condensation temperature for microcavity polaritons, allowing for their internal structure. We consider polaritons formed from localised excitons in a planar microcavity, using a generalised Dicke model. At low densities, we find a condensation temperature T_c \propto \rho, as expected for a gas of structureless polaritons. However, as T_c becomes of the order of the Rabi splitting, the structure of the polaritons becomes relevant, and the condensation temperature is that of a...

We systematically derive an effective two-state Hamiltonian for the dipolar Ising magnet LiYHoF4, including quantum corrections which arise from the transverse dipolar and hyperfine interactions. These corrections are derived using a generalised Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to leading order in the small parameters given by the ratio of the interaction energies to the energy of the first excited electronic state of the Holmium ions. The resulting low-energy Hamiltonian involves two-level...

We discuss the diamagnetism induced in an isolated quantum Hall bilayer with total filling factor one by an in-plane magnetic field. This is a signature of counterflow superfluidity in these systems. We calculate magnetically induced currents in the presence of pinned vortices nucleated by charge disorder, and predict a history-dependent diamagnetism that could persist on laboratory timescales. For current samples we find that the maximum in-plane moment is small, but with stronger tunneling...

A theoretical model is presented which explains the dominant decoherence process in a microcavity polariton condensate. The mechanism which is invoked is the effect of self-phase modulation, whereby interactions transform polariton number fluctuations into random energy variations. The model shows that the phase coherence decay, g1(t), has a Kubo form, which can be Gaussian or exponential, depending on whether the number fluctuations are slow or fast. This fluctuation rate also determines the...

A trapped polariton condensate with continuous pumping and decay is analyzed using a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii model. Whereas an equilibrium condensate is characterized by a macroscopic occupation of a ground state, here the steady-states take more general forms. Some are characterized by a large population in an excited state, and others by large populations in several states. In the latter case, the highly-populated states synchronize to a common frequency above a critical density....

We present a theory for the regime of coherent interlayer tunneling in a disordered quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor one, allowing for the effect of static vortices. We find that the system consists of domains of polarized superfluid phase. Injected currents introduce phase slips between the polarized domains which are pinned by disorder. We present a model of saturated tunneling domains that predicts a critical current for the breakdown of coherent tunneling that is extensive in...

In answer to two questions raised by W.N. Everitt, we show that, given p greater than 1 and any countably infinite set of points on the positive lambda-axis, there is a q(x) in L superscript(0, infinity) for which the set of points constitutes the point-continuous spectrum associated with the equation y(x) + (lambda - q(x))y(x) = 0 (0 less than or equal to x less than infinity) and some homogeneous boundary condition at x = 0. We study the equilibrium properties of a system of dipole-active excitons coupled to a single photon mode at fixed total excitation. Treating the presence or absence of a trapped exciton as a two-level system produces a model that is exactly soluble. It gives a simple description of the physics of polariton condensation in optical cavities beyond the low-density bosonic regime.

We are concerned with the Sturm-Liouville problem on the half line. We show that when the potential $q$ is subject only to power decay at infinity the $L^2$ solution may be continued into a sector of the so-called un-physical sheet. This gives rise to resonance free regions and the numerical estimation of resonances outside these regions.

We consider performing adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) using frequency-swept driving pulses to excite a collection of interacting two-level systems. Such a model arises in a wide range of many-body quantum systems, such as cavity QED or quantum dots, where a nonlinear component couples to light. We analyze the one-dimensional case using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, as well as the mean field limit where the system is described by a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. These limits provide...

We consider the spectral function $\rho(\mu)$ $(\mu \geq 0)$ for the Sturm-Liouville equation $y^{''}+(\lambda-q)y =0$ on $[0,\infty)$ with the boundary condition $y(0)=0$ and where $q$ has slow decay $O(x^{-\alpha})$ $(a>0)$ as $x\to \infty$. We develop our previous methods of locating spectral concentration for $q$ with rapid exponential decay (JCAM 81 (1997) 333-348) to deal with the new theoretical and computational complexities which arise for slow decay.

We consider polariton condensation in a generalized Dicke model, describing a single-mode cavity containing quantum dots, and extend our previous mean-field theory to allow for finite-size fluctuations. Within the fluctuation-dominated regime the correlation functions differ from their (trivial) mean-field values. We argue that the low-energy physics of the model, which determines the photon statistics in this fluctuation-dominated crossover regime, is that of the (quantum) anharmonic...

We connect three phenomena in which a coherent electromagnetic field could be generated: polariton condensation, phase-locking in arrays of underdamped Josephson junctions, and lasing. All these phenomena have been described using Dicke-type models of spins coupled to a single photon mode. These descriptions may be distinguished by whether the spins are quantum or classical, and whether they are strongly or weakly damped.

We present and solve a model for the vortex configuration of a disordered quantum Hall bilayer in the limit of strong and smooth disorder. We argue that there is a characteristic disorder strength below which vortices will be rare, and above which they proliferate. We predict that this can be observed tuning the electron density in a given sample. The ground state in the strong-disorder regime can be understood as an emulsion of vortex-antivortex crystals. Its signatures include a suppression...

This article is from Trials , volume 13 . Abstract Abstract: Background: Numerous technical modifications to radical prostatectomy have been proposed. Such modifications are likely to lead to only slight improvements in outcomes. Although small differences would be worthwhile, an appropriately powered randomized trial would need to be very large, and thus of doubtful feasibility given the expense, complexity and regulatory burden of contemporary clinical trials. We have proposed a novel...

The problem of college students' writing skills or lack thereof is generally agreed upon in academia. One cause is the inordinate amount of multiple choice/true false/fill in the blank type of tests that students take in high school and college. Not only is there is a dearth of actual classes in writing available, few students recognize the need to improve their writing, nor are inclined to invest the time, effort, and energy to do so. While computer spell and grammar checks only minimally...

We study the stability of collective amplitude excitations in non-equilibrium polariton condensates. These excitations correspond to renormalized upper polaritons and to the collective amplitude modes of atomic gases and superconductors. They would be present following a quantum quench or could be created directly by resonant excitation. We show that uniform amplitude excitations are unstable to the production of excitations at finite wavevectors, leading to the formation of density-modulated...

This paper is part of a series of papers in which the asymptotic theory and appropriate symbolic computer code are developed to compute the asymptotic expansion of the solution of an n-th order ordinary differential equation. The paper examines the situation when the matrix that appears in the Levinson expansion has a double eigenvalue. Application is made to a fourth-order ODE with known special function solution.

That excitons in solids might condense into a phase-coherent ground state was proposed about 40 years ago, and has been attracting experimental and theoretical attention ever since. Although experimental confirmation has been hard to come by, the concepts released by this phenomenon have been widely influential. This tutorial review discusses general aspects of the theory of exciton and polariton condensates, focussing on the reasons for coherence in the ground state wavefunction, the BCS to...

We present a theory of the critical interlayer tunneling current in a disordered quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor one, allowing for the effect of static vortices. In agreement with recent experiments [Phys. Rev. B 80, 165120 (2009); ibid. 78, 075302 (2008)], we find that this critical current is proportional to the area of the sample and is comparable in magnitude to observed values. This reflects the formation of a Bean critical state as a result of current injection at the...

We consider a generalization of the Dicke model. It describes localized, physically separated, saturable excitations, such as excitons bound on impurities, coupled to a single long-lived mode of an optical cavity. We consider the thermal equilibrium of the model at a fixed total number of excitons and photons. We find a phase in which both the cavity field and the excitonic polarization are coherent. This phase corresponds to a Bose condensate of cavity polaritons, generalized to allow for the...

We calculate the absorption spectra of a semiconductor microcavity into which a non-equilibrium exciton population has been pumped. We predict strong peaks in the spectrum corresponding to collective modes analogous to the Cooper modes in superconductors and fermionic atomic gases. These modes can become unstable, leading to the formation of off-equilibrium quantum condensates. We calculate a phase diagram for condensation, and show that the dominant instabilities can be at a finite momentum....

This paper reviews basic information needed by college students to write a term paper. Sources of information are discussed (i.e. books and journal articles), as are the "nuts and bolts" of procuring the needed information to write a quality term paper. The ERIC system and the Internet are discussed; particular attention is paid to the various university writing labs that are available on the Internet. (Author/NKA)
